How to keep your best friends safe this summer
When it comes to the weather, the Great British weather is one of the most unpredictable, one day it's raining, the next it's a heat wave!
With this in mind, you need to be aware of the dangers this poses to your dogs.
Dogs have very little control of their own body temperature. You may not be aware of this but Dogs cannot sweat (in areas where they have fur). So you need to keep this in mind in the summer.
One of the most dangerous situations for your dog, claiming so many lives each year is where they are left inside cars in hot weather. You CANNOT leave your dog in any vehicle in these conditions, even if you only want to leave the vehicle for a few minutes. It's also important to know that an open car window is NOT ENOUGH to keep the temperature inside cool enough. Heat can double in temperature in an hour.
Not only are vehicles dangerous, but also conservatories, sheds and garages.
Dogs need lots of fresh water throughout the day. You must keep on top of this, if their water bowl is empty you must refill it straightaway. Also, ensure that the dog bowl cannot be knocked over. If dogs are left outside make sure that there are no other potentially dangerous liquids about as dogs will hunt out any other liquid and consume it, especially if they are very thirsty.
Shaded areas are very important for dogs, ensure that your dog has lots of shaded areas nearby. Remember, there are pet sunscreens that you can buy especially if your dog has light coloured noses or ears.
If you plan to walk your dog, try not to walk your dog in the midday sun. Walk them either early in the morning, or late at night. Also keep in mind the temperature of the pavement, unlike us, dogs don't have shoes on the ground and they could get very hot or burnt paws which will upset your dog.
Another 'cool' little tip is to place your dog’s favourite toy into a bucket of cold, ice water. It will be fun to play with and also it will cool your pet! If you know of any other tips or products to help with keeping dogs cool in the warm weather, why not share them on either our Facebook page or Tweet them on our Twitter page.
We hope this information proves useful in keeping your friend cool and safe in this very hot summer weather.
